AI search tools such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search and Perplexity build their answers from pages they can crawl, index and quote. For a service business, that means publishing pages that answer one question plainly, state facts a reader can check, describe the business the same way everywhere, and let the right crawlers in. None of this replaces SEO. It sharpens it.
Does AI search need a separate optimization strategy?
No, and Google says so directly. Its guidance on AI features and your website states that "there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary." To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.
That is useful news for a small team. You do not need a second content program for AI answers. You need the fundamentals done well, because AI features lean on the same index and the same quality signals as classic results.
Google lists the practices that matter:
Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting layer that sits in front of your site.
Make content findable through internal links.
Provide a good page experience.
Keep important content in text, not only in images or video.
Make sure structured data matches the visible text on the page.
Google also notes that AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, issuing several related searches across subtopics to build one response. A single buyer question can therefore pull from several of your pages, if each one answers its own subtopic clearly.
What does an answer-first page look like?
An answer-first page puts a direct, complete answer to its main question in the first paragraph and then supports it. If a prospect asks "how long does a website redesign take" and your page opens with three paragraphs of company history, an answer engine has to dig. A page that opens with the answer, then explains the variables, is easier to quote and easier to read.
Build service pages and articles around the questions buyers ask before they call you:
List the questions your sales calls keep hearing. Pricing model, timelines, what is included, what you need from the client, and how you report.
Give each substantial question its own heading, phrased the way a buyer would ask it.
Open each section with a one-sentence answer, then add detail, exceptions and examples.
Keep a short questions-and-answers block at the end of key pages for the narrower questions.
This structure also helps people who skim, which is most people. If you want a broader checklist for the pages themselves, our founder's checklist for a website that converts covers layout and calls to action.
Which facts make a page worth citing?
A page is worth citing when it states specific, checkable facts that a reader cannot get from a generic article. Google's guidance on creating helpful, people-first content asks whether content provides "original information, reporting, research, or analysis" and whether it demonstrates "first-hand expertise and a depth of knowledge."
For a service business, citable facts are usually things only you can state:
What you include in each service and what you do not.
How your process runs, step by step, with the real handoffs.
Your turnaround times, where you can stand behind them.
Where you operate, which hours you work and who the client talks to.
Your engagement terms, in plain words.
Two cautions. First, only publish a number you can support. An invented statistic is a liability once an answer engine repeats it under your name. Second, say who wrote the page. Google's same guidance asks whether it is "self-evident to your visitors who authored your content" and whether pages carry a byline where one might be expected.
Why does entity consistency matter?
Entity consistency matters because AI systems have to work out that the business on your site, your Google Business Profile, your social profiles and the directories that mention you are the same business. When your name, address, services and description vary from one place to the next, you make that harder.
Start with your own site:
Use one business name, spelled the same way, on every page.
Keep contact details identical in the footer, the contact page and your structured data.
Describe your core services with the same terms across service pages, articles and profiles.
Then mark it up. Google's documentation on Organization structured data says it "can help Google better understand your organization's administrative details" and "disambiguate your organization in search results." The `sameAs` property lets you point to other pages about your organization, such as your social profiles. Keep it honest and current, because Google also asks that structured data match what is visible on the page.
Off your site, check that your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn page and any directory listings match. Our guide to becoming a Google verified business covers the profile side.
Are you blocking the crawlers AI search uses?
You might be, and it is worth checking, because each provider uses separate crawlers for search and for model training. Blocking the wrong one can remove you from answers you want to appear in.
Google's AI features use the normal Search index, so Googlebot access is what counts. Google also offers a separate `Google-Extended` token for controlling whether your content is used for AI training and grounding. According to Google's crawler documentation, Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal in Google Search."
OpenAI
OpenAI's crawler documentation separates three agents:
`OAI-SearchBot` surfaces websites in ChatGPT's search features. "Sites that are opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers," though they may still appear as navigational links.
`GPTBot` crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Disallowing it is a training opt-out, and the settings are independent, so you can allow search while disallowing training.
`ChatGPT-User` handles user-initiated visits. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it and that it is not used to decide whether content appears in search.
OpenAI notes that it can take about 24 hours after a robots.txt update for its search systems to adjust.
Perplexity
Perplexity's bot documentation says `PerplexityBot` is designed "to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" and is not used to crawl content for AI foundation models. It recommends allowing PerplexityBot in robots.txt. `Perplexity-User` fetches pages when a user asks a question and, because the user requested the fetch, "generally ignores robots.txt rules."
A quick audit
Open your robots.txt and list every user agent it names.
Check whether a blanket rule written for one AI crawler also blocks the search crawlers you want.
Ask whoever runs your CDN or firewall whether bot protection is challenging these crawlers. Google's guidance names CDN and hosting infrastructure for this reason.
Decide on training access as a separate question from search access.
How do you measure AI search visibility?
You measure it with the reports you already have, plus a manual check. Google says AI features are included in overall search traffic and are reported in the Search Console Performance report under the "Web" search type. That means you will not see a separate AI Overviews line, so watch the pages and queries you care about over time.
For ChatGPT and Perplexity, the practical method is to ask the questions your buyers ask and note whether your pages are cited. Keep a short list of those questions, check them monthly, and record what you see. Treat it as a trend, not a precise metric.
Fast, stable pages help here too. Our article on Core Web Vitals optimization covers the page-experience side.

ACXHUB's SEO team, office-based in Cebu since 2017, builds and maintains this kind of site: answer-first service pages, structured data that matches the page, and crawl access reviewed as part of technical SEO. You brief one Account Coordinator, who routes the work to the right specialist and reports back each week.
Questions people ask
Do I need a separate page for AI search?
No. Google states there are no additional requirements or special optimizations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Clear pages that answer real questions serve classic results and AI answers at the same time.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is a training decision, not a search decision. OpenAI treats GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot independently, so you can disallow training and still allow ChatGPT search to show your pages.
Does structured data get me into AI Overviews?
Google does not say it does. It says structured data should match the visible text. Use it to describe your business accurately, not as a shortcut.
How long until a robots.txt change takes effect in ChatGPT search?
OpenAI says it can take about 24 hours for its search systems to adjust after a robots.txt update.
